  To obtain a Class 'A' or 'D' license:

  • You must be at least 18 years old and hold a valid Ontario Class G licence.
  • Pass the applicable knowledge test.
  • Meet the Ministry approved vision standards.
  • Provide a satisfactory medical certificate on the application. Medical requirements must be satisfied before any other test (except) vision may be administered.
  • Demonstrate driving competence during a road test in the appropriate vehicle.

  A Class 'A' driver's licence:

  • Permits you to drive a vehicle and towed vehicle where the towed vehicles have a total gross weight exceeding 4600 kg (10,000 lb).
  • Class A licence holder is also permitted to drive a Class D or G vehicle.

  A Class 'D' driver's licence:

  • Permits you to drive a vehicle greater than 11,000 kg (24,000 lb) gross weight or registered gross weight, or any combination of motor vehicle greater than a total gross weight or registered gross weight of 11,000 kg (24,000 lb) and towed vehicle where the towed vehicle has a total gross weight not greater than 4600 kg (10,000 lb).
  • Class D licence holder is also permitted to drive a Class G vehicle.
