High-Occupancy Vehicle (H.O.V.) Lanes in Ontario

On December 13, 2005, HOV lanes will open on Highway 404 (southbound from Highway 7 to the 401) and Highway 403 (in both directions between the 407 and the 401). HOV lanes are only open to buses, fire, ambulance, police or vehicles carrying at least two people, including the driver. HOV lanes are designed to encourage carpooling. They are located in the leftmost lane and are separated from general traffic lanes by a "buffer" area indicated by painted white lines on the pavement. Drivers will enter and exit the HOV lane only at designated points. The Ontario Provincial Police will enforce the proper use of HOV lanes. Drivers who incorrectly use these lanes will face penalties.

The following are not permitted to use an HOV lane:

  • A vehicle with only the driver
  • Motorcycles with only the driver
  • Commercial trucks greater than 6.5 metres in length or with a gross weight of more than 4,500 kg
  • Taxis or limousines without a fare

For more details about HOV lanes please visit the Ontario Ministry of Transportation site at http://www.mto.gov.on.ca/english/traveller/hov/.
